In the evening, when they got back from Siena, Shannon told them everything about the Palio, which took place twice a year. I was a traditional event in the area. Before the race, there had been a historical procession, in which the competitors presented themselves in medieval costumes and their coat of arms. She was enthusiastic about the colors, the costumes and the highly adorned horses. The race itself was incredibly short and led only three times around the piazza and the horses were bareback. Restraints were allowed, even if it was not allowed to pull another competitor from his horse, they all tried to do it. The race was considered to be the toughest race in the world. The winner was the horse that crosses the finish line after the last round. Even if the horse got there without its rider on the back.
